Prometheus ignition system

The Prometheus rocket engine is Europe’s next-generation, reusable engine designed for low-cost, high-performance space launches. APP plays a key role in this program by developing and producing the engine’s thrust chamber igniter and gas generator igniter, critical components for reliable and safe engine start-up.

Prometheus operates on liquid oxygen and methane, combining efficiency with reusability. Its ignition system is vital for stable combustion, and APP’s torch igniter is engineered to meet the extreme demands of spaceflight. The Prometheus ignition system is based on a torch igniter that uses gaseous oxygen and methane under high pressure. These propellants are injected into the igniter chamber, where they form a combustible mixture. Ignition is initiated by electrically heated elements, which raise the temperature of the mixture to achieve reliable combustion. Designed for reliability and multiple engine cycles, the APP torch igniter ensures precise, safe starts while supporting Prometheus’ goal of cost-effective, reusable propulsion. By contributing this essential subsystem, APP strengthens Europe’s independent access to space and demonstrates its expertise in advanced aerospace technologies.
