APP recently completed its first hot-firing test campaign of a 3D-printed Igniter Torch at our in-house test facility. APP developed the Igniter Torch with Materialise GmbH, using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) with Inconel 718. ArianeGroup GmbH contributed its experience with 3D-printed rocket engine elements. The 3D-printed Igniter Torch successfully demonstrated the same performance and flight envelope as an existing flight-qualified APP product. APP concluded the campaign with an exceptionally long 10-second hot firing. The Igniter Torch showed no degradation. Additive Manufacturing (AM) can reduce lead times and material waste while enabling efficient, mass-optimised designs. It also supports faster and more flexible development cycles. APP developed the Igniter Torch under ESA's Future Innovation and Research for Space Transportation (FIRST!) initiative. Further tests will explore additional applications of AM technology and its potential use in future flight ignition systems. APP thanks ESA and the Netherlands Space Agency for supporting the development and de-risking of innovative space technologies.
