Background & Opportunity

APP develops parachute deployment systems for space applications. A new customer request requires scaling this technology from deploying 2.5 kg parachutes to approximately 40 kg. This significant increase introduces complex challenges in energy, pressure, and structural loads. This assignment focuses on assessing the feasibility and defining possible design directions for such a system.

Objective

Assess the technical feasibility of scaling APP’s mortar-based parachute deployment system to handle a 40 kg parachute and propose viable design concepts.

Tasks & Objectives

  • Analyze current system and scaling effects (pressure, energy, loads)
  • Define system requirements (velocity, stroke, safety constraints)
  • Perform analytical calculations (energy, pressure, forces, stresses)
  • Assess manufacturability (materials and production methods)
  • Identify risks and evaluate design concepts

Deliverables

  • Feasibility report including calculations, models, risk analysis and conclusions
  • Concept comparison and recommended development path
  • Final presentation summarizing key findings and proposals

Profile

  • MSc student Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Independent, analytical and proactive mindset
  • Motivated, flexible and reflective
  • Strong communication skills in Dutch and/or English
