Laser ignition system for rocket engines
The Vega Upper Stage engine is a key element of Europe’s light launch capability, enabling precise and reliable access to space. Designed for mission flexibility, it supports accurate orbital insertion and the deployment of multiple payloads, reinforcing Vega’s role in Europe’s autonomous launch portfolio.
The Vega Upper Stage ignition system is based on a torch igniter that uses hydrogen and oxygen stored under high pressure. These gases are injected into the igniter chamber, where they mix to form a combustible environment. To initiate combustion, the igniter is fitted with two electrically heated glow plugs. When energized, the glow plugs reach a high temperature that causes the hydrogen–oxygen mixture to ignite. Thanks to its restart capability, the Vega Upper Stage engine allows precise orbit shaping and phased payload deployment within a single mission. Its combination of simplicity, accuracy, and operational robustness makes it a cornerstone of Vega’s versatility and performance.
